Welcome to a podcast for Us. The Yoga Professionals.

Welcome!!

My name is Rebecca Sebastian,

And I am a yoga professional first.

Once, years ago, I read this book, Creativity, Inc. that set me on a trajectory to dive deeply into the ways in which we work as yoga pros. I remember vividly reading that book with tears streaming down my face as I realized that my job, being a yoga teacher and yoga therapist, was a deeply creative one. And nobody saw me as a professional. Too often, I was involved with overly controlling and deeply problematic yoga spaces that made me feel uncomfortable and exploited my honest desire to feel better, more whole, and to reduce my suffering.

Dr. Shaym Ranganathan once said on the podcast, “nobody comes to yoga because things are going great”, and that is so true. The reason we stay is because we want to share what we found in ourselves through dedicated yoga practice with others.

Yoga professionals are people who are growth-minded, have seen some sh*t, and are much more intelligent than anyone gives us credit for. We read anatomy books for fun. We love an adventure. We can talk philosophy and life until wee hours of the morning. We dive deeply into the 1000s of ways your foot can move independently. We choose to live life as ethically and responsibly as we can in each moment.

And we tend not to be really into the beaten path. We are outliers, through and through. Counter-culture is part of our story, and always has been.

A yoga studio was the first place I ever felt like I was with my people. And I bet you feel that way too.

So with that…Hey Friends. Welcome to Working In Yoga.

Working In Yoga is a conversation. A conversation between colleagues, between friends. Between passionate practitioners ready to unpack the challenges of sharing a spiritual practice and discipline in a world that requires us to show up fully for our own nourishment, joy, and support (and that includes money).

Things will get complicated.

But unlike your family dinner table at the next holiday, we are going to embrace the difficult and the challenging. We will also embrace the unabashedly joyful, the fun, and the passionate. All in one continuous conversation.

We are proud of our profession. We know that yoga can help, can make a difference in people’s lives. There are 1000s of years of tradition and practice that support this. Yoga made a difference for me, if you are reading this it likely made a difference for you. But that doesn’t mean everything is all love and light. It means Yoga as a tradition is important enough for me to be willing to get messy.

We need each other.

And we need guidance from folks who have actually made their way in this industry. For too long we have heard that yoga isn’t a real profession (yep, one of our leading organizations actually said that), and at best it is a side hustle.

But those of us, working in yoga are here. And we long for co-workers.

Me? I’ve been a yoga teacher, yoga therapist, yoga trainer, yoga workshop facilitator, yoga non-profit co-founder, yoga studio owner, traveling teacher, podcast host, and featured speaker. And I have managed to make a living at this job as a solo parent with two children.

I know there are others out there like me.

I know there are folks who want to talk shop, figure out how to make their way in this profession, and connect with other people who love yoga and love sharing it with others.

Support Working In Yoga and let’s try something different.
